Why St Kitts is the perfect island for active explorers

If you love cruises, sunny getaways and exciting activities, selecting a Caribbean itinerary that stops off at the beautiful island of St Kitts is likely to be an excellent choice.

One of the British Leeward Islands, St Kitts is situated in the West Indies and is renowned for the incredible natural beauty it is home to. Stunning waters, amazing beaches, magnificent mountain ranges and rainforest can be found here - and all offer the potential for adventure.

So, if you embark on Caribbean cruises that stop at this desirable destination, what exactly can you do during your visit?

There is certainly plenty for you to cram in, from delving into the world hidden under the water's surface to zip-lining through rainforest canopies. Indeed, there are so many options for adventurous, exhilarating activities that you really will be spoilt for choice!

One of the things that the island is most famous for is its beaches. Of course, you could easily spend a day stretched out on the sand, but there is far more to tempt you here. For example, you could enjoy a relaxing swim in its warm waters, or perhaps take a peek at the amazing marine life with a spot of snorkelling.

However, the destination is a fantastic one for diving, so why not take the opportunity to see as much of the local coral reefs and brightly coloured fish as possible? Among the top sites is Monkey Shoals, which is suitable for most divers. Here you can see nurse sharks, lizard fish and rays, among other creatures.

Alternatively, if you're up for something of a challenge you could dive in the area dubbed 'Aquarium'. Home to a diverse fish population, it is also prone to rough conditions, meaning only experience divers should venture out here.

Designated a National Marine Park, Sandy Point is an incredible diving destination. It offers some of the most exciting diving opportunities in the world, with swim-through canyons, vast coral heads and a staggering variety of hypnotic creatures.

Back on dry land, there is a variety of other exhilarating active experiences to be had. Perhaps one of the most thrilling is zip-lining through the rainforest - something that's bound to be one of the most incredible and memorable experiences of your trip. As well as enjoying unparalleled bird's-eye views of all the incredible life below, you can spot historical sites and even catch glimpses of neighbouring islands as you whizz along the wires.

Climbing to Sofa Rock, which once formed the cap of a volcano, you can sit and take in the view. You can then head down 1,000 ft into the crater core - which still steams today.

Alternatively, you could head on a hike through the Valley of the Giants, discovering all the sights and sounds of the incredible rainforest.

If all your activities have tired you out a little there are also plenty of ways to take it easy for a moment. As well as simply relaxing on the beach, you could take a tour on the St Kitts Scenic Railway around most of the island, or you might like to pay a visit to one of the location's numerous historical attractions.

For an active day out in sunny climes, a visit to St Kitts certainly won't disappoint. The only challenge will be deciding how exactly to spend your time! Royal Caribbean cruises are among the operators that stop off at the isle as part of itineraries littered with equally amazing destinations.
