Why Longleat Safari Park is perfect for families

Monday, 30 January 2012 9:02 AM

Longleat Safari Park offers the chance to enjoy one of the most fun days out anywhere in the UK. Luckily, if you are staying in Cotswold holiday cottages, you will not have to travel far to get to there - so make sure you include a visit on your schedule.

The safari park is the UK's number one and has even been featured in a BBC televisions series. Yet there is so much more on offer here than simply the animals.

Having said that, the exotic creatures are the main attraction, particularly as you are able to drive through the park and see them roaming free.

Your first stop will be the east African-style game reserve, where you will be able to see zebras galloping past your windows and tall giraffes loping by.

From here, you will make your way to Flamingo Valley, where - as the name suggests - dozens of the bright pink birds reside. Make sure you take a picture of them balancing on one leg and keep an eye out for other birds, like Carolina ducks and sacred ibis.

Next stop is the Vulture Venue and these bald birds really do look magnificent as they fly through the park.

Perhaps the most exciting part of your journey comes next - Monkey Drive-Thru. The cheeky primates love to play on the cars that drive through their part of the park - so make sure you keep the windows tightly closed.

You will get the chance to see some really big game once you emerge, with rhinoceros, elephants, lions and tigers all waiting around the corner for you. While you may never have the opportunity to see them in the wild, being able to watch them play together in these wide open expanses is the next best thing.

Once your tour comes to an end, you will find even more waiting for you in the rest of the park.

Your kids are sure to love playing in the adventure park, where popular attractions include the bat cave and jungle kingdom, while there are also memorable shows put on regularly, including bird of prey displays.

Of course, you can also visit Longleat House, a beautiful Elizabethan stately home that sits in grounds designed by renowned landscape artist Capability Brown.

Your visit here could well be the highlight of your time in the Cotswolds. By the time you get back to your self-catering cottages, you are all sure to sleep soundly.
