81 per cent seek active and adventurous honeymoons
A recent poll launched by new magazine, Unique Honeymoons, revealed that only 12 per cent of people would opt for the traditional fly-n-flop beach style honeymoon, whereas an overwhelming majority of 81 per cent say they’d take the opportunity to plan an adventurous trip of a life time.
Unique Honeymoons magazine is dedicated to those newlyweds who want more adventure from their honeymooning and provides inspiration as well as practical information. The magazine has now revealed its top active honeymoon hotspots for 2012.
1. Tanzania - Combine the soft dreamy beaches of Zanzibar with a view of the Great Migration across the Serengeti and a climb up Mt Kilimanjaro.
2. Burma - The hottest honeymoon spot for 2012: Burma is just now opening up to tourists and here you can explore temples, hike around beautiful lakes and enjoy wedding blessings from Buddhist monks
3. Borneo - This exotic jungle location is perfect for an active honeymoon, from rainforest hikes, to visits with the orangutans or even summiting Mt Kinabalu.
4. Namibia - The best place to board a hot-air balloon for dawn desert views and a champagne breakfast. Explore the immense Fish River Canyon or scale the scarlet Sossusvlei sand dunes.
5. Japan - Embrace the tradition of 'hadaka no tsukiai' (naked companionship) in steamy hot springs and visit Hakone National Park to undertake a whole host of activities, from hiking to boating and cable car rides, as well as spectacular views of Mt. Fuji.
6. Ikaria, Greece - This isle sees a fraction of the visitors of nearby Santorini, but the seaside sunsets are just as good, and the tavernas half the price. Kayak through the ice blue waters and climb impressive rock formations.
7. Western Australia - A new flying safari around the Kimberley (from April 2012) will take newlyweds to the region's remotest Outback.
8. Lake District - A wild swim in the remote waters of Langstrath Beck will elevate mood and libido and is perfect paired with hikes through lush undulating waterfall landscapes.
9. Argentina - Learn to tango in Buenos Aires, stay in wine lodges around Mendoza, whale watch in Península Valdés and trek through the wilds of Patagonia.
10. Kyrgyzstan - For a honeymoon with bragging rights, cosy up in a lakeside yurt and ride across the Central Asian plains in Kyrgyzstan.
Editor of Unique Honeymoons magazine, Sarah Baxter said, "Most people assume couples just want to collapse on a pretty beach for two weeks. However, our poll showed this is far from the truth with most Brits looking for unique and adventurous ways to start married life. We have had to wade through the oil slick of spa hotels and petal baths to uncover experiences that will really deliver on this new trend. So that’s a no to Caribbean all-inclusives and yes please to floating tents in Cambodia or Swedish treehotels.”
