If you're keen to combine staying in UK holiday cottages with some enthralling fishing, why not visit Cumbria? Experienced anglers and beginners alike will find the north-west English county is a fantastic place to take part in the sport, not least of all because they will be able to fish in tranquil, peaceful surroundings.

Cumbria is well known for being the home of the Lake District - the largest national park in the UK - so it should be little surprise there are a range of lakes and rivers where you can cast a line in the hope of reeling in a big catch!

Perhaps one of the best spots for fishing enthusiasts of all abilities is Esthwaite Water. The largest stocked lake in the north-west of England - it is topped up with fish on a weekly basis - here you will be able to catch everything from rainbow trout to perch.

Set in the stunning Silurian hills, this is an ideal place to take in Cumbria's jaw-dropping natural landscapes as you fish. A number of competitions take place here throughout the year, ideal if you're seeking an active holiday where you can pit your angling skills against the best.

However, don't worry if you have never been fishing before as there are a number of schools situated at Esthwaite Water - as well as further around the county - at which experienced instructors can take you through everything you need to know to fish safely.

With experts on hand to show you how to choose the right rod, the most effective casting methods and the best way to release caught fish back into the water, in no time at all you may be able to reel the creatures in.

Alternatively, you could find Fell Foot Park to be a great place to go fishing. Situated on the southern shore of Windermere, this picturesque park is a perfect place to cast a line, while between April and October you can hire a kayak or rowing boat and take to the water.

Bassenthwaite Lake, meanwhile, is an ideal destination to catch salmon and pike. It is situated near Keswick and its possible to try night fishing here, something which is sure to be an exciting prospect.

Eden Valley Trout Lake and the River Ellen in Mungrisedale - which contains wild brown trout among other species - are two of the county's other fishing hotspots, so you can be sure there will be plenty of places to enjoy this exciting pursuit.

For an amazing activity-filled break, you can be confident that booking fishing holiday cottages in Cumbria means you are well-placed to have a wonderful getaway.
