Memorable daytrips in the Algarve

The Algarve is one of the most enduringly popular regions in Portugal, so you won't be disappointed if you book luxury holiday villas here. While you may be happy to simply relax in your accommodation, there are a few excursions you should go on.

Choosing Algarve villas for rent is a great option for families, as there are beaches to build sandcastles on, countryside to explore and water sports to have a go at. It is well worth planning your getaway with the kids before you depart, so that you can be sure you have something fun for them to look forward to every day of your trip.

The Algarve stretches along the southernmost shores of Portugal, with the coastline looking out on the Atlantic Ocean. Wherever you choose to book your accommodation, you won't have far to travel to reach a stunning sandy beach.

However, one destination that is worth journeying a little further to is Lagos. It may be a city, but Lagos is small enough for your children to not feel overwhelmed and it is a great place to admire traditional Portuguese architecture.

For a real adventure, make your way to Ponta da Piedade. From this small beach, you can hire a boat and paddle out to explore the natural caves that form part of the coastline here. There is also a lighthouse and a nearby fish market where you could pick up some delicious seafood to prepare back at your holiday home.

From Lagos, you can also take excursions further afield, such as to the west coast of Portugal. Costa Vicentina is a National Trust area, meaning the coast and woodland here is particularly unspoilt. As a result, if you and your family are looking for somewhere to experience a more rural side of Portugal away from the built-up resorts, this is the place to come to.

Water sports fans will also be keen to visit, as the coast is famed for its surf. Hire a board and spend the day teaching your little ones how to take to the waves.

While hitting the beach is enough for some, for a daytrip that's a little more exhilarating, treat your brood to a visit to one of the water parks or theme parks. Aqualand is a particular favourite, and there's something on offer here to suit all ages.

Situated close to Guia, the site has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, water rapids and multiple slides - some of which are 36 m high!

If you have selected a villa rental in Caramujeira for your stay, you will swiftly fall in love with this beautiful village. Nestled in the countryside, there is some beautiful scenery to be enjoyed here so, as well as visiting the beaches, you may wish to arrange a stroll with your family through these magnificent vistas.

Back on the sand, there are coves and rock pools that are perfect for taking your youngest children to see what microscopic forms of life they can spot moving in the shallow water.

For one night of your stay, make your way into the village for dinner at one of the restaurants, where you can tuck into some delicious freshly-caught seafood. Indeed, this could be the perfect end to your getaway together.
