Top tips when it comes to preparing for hiking in Lake District National Park
Staying in Lake District holiday cottages so you can go hiking in this beautiful national park is certain to be a memorable activity break. Home to some of the most stunning scenery in the UK, the region is a firm favourite among walkers.
If you are planning to embark on a trek, there are a few things you can do to prepare that will ensure the excursion goes without a hitch.
The first is to plan your route by considering how far you would like to walk and where you want to go.
It is important you choose something that you believe reflects your abilities so that you are able to enjoy it right to the end, taking in all the gorgeous scenery you will be met with along the way. You'll be pleased to learn there are trails in the park that cater for all levels of skill.
Once you know where you are going, you can gather together the things you will need. Arguably the most important is a sturdy pair of walking boots. These are more effective than trainers or wellies when hiking, as they are securely fitted to your foot and ankle, while they incorporate a good grip on the sole that will be useful as you negotiate muddy paths or slippery rocks.
In terms of clothing, opt for layers so you're prepared for every temperature and be sure to bring along a waterproof jacket, even if it is sunny when you set out.
Grab a rucksack and put some bottles of water in it - as hiking can be thirsty work - along with some snacks. You should also bring along a map and compass in case you lose your way.
If you are doing a particularly long hike, it is wise to take a torch in case you will be on the home stretch after nightfall, while a whistle could be used to keep all your group together should the dark or fog make visibility difficult.
However, try to plan a journey that will see you arriving back a few hours before sunset, to be on the safe side.
Before you leave, grab your camera, as you will pass some breathtaking sights that you are sure to want to capture on film.
By preparing as carefully as you can, there's a good chance your hike will go without a hitch and be one of the highlights of your stay in Cumbria holiday cottages.
