Why choose walking holidays in unspoilt Slovenia?
If you are eager to embark on a walking break and are searching for a destination rich in unspoilt scenery, consider Slovenia. Home to superb natural landscapes and unforgettable walking trails, it is the ideal choice for an active getaway.
Indeed, one of the biggest benefits of Slovenia breaks is that they offer a seemingly endless supply of stunning scenery, most of which boasts a charming timeless quality.
Traditional villages and tranquil landscapes abound, giving you the chance to discover destinations that make you feel like time has stood still.
Among the most beautiful places you can explore in the nation is the Soca Valley, which is situated in the Primorska region - an area of Slovenia heavily influenced by the Mediterranean. Reaching it will involve a thrilling mountain descent - but not before a day exploring the charming medieval town of Cividale del Friuli.
Itineraries that take in the Soca Valley typically begin in Italy. Starting your break in Cividale del Friuli, you will have a day to discover the delights of its old town, pretty squares and inviting cafes and wine bars.
Transferring to a mountain hut the following day, you will tackle the first trail of your walking holiday in Slovenia. The day's route will begin at 1,300 m, from where you will ascend to an altitude of 1,643 m to reach the summit of the Matajur.
You will be generously rewarded for your efforts, being able to enjoy some truly spectacular panoramic views out over the surrounding area. On clear days, expect to admire vistas of the Julian Alps, the Adriatic Sea and the Dolomites, as well as seeing the splendid Soca Valley for the first time.
Once you have admired the view, you will begin your descent - which will feature some equally beautiful panoramas - to cross the border into Slovenia. Then, continue your journey to the Soca Valley, before finally arriving at Kobarid.
Stepping out once more the next day, you will enjoy a shorter route around the locality and its surroundings. This beautiful Alpine town is a real joy to explore and, as you walk, you can expect to come across some superb attractions.
These include the World War I Museum, which details the town's role in the conflict, the awe-inspiring Soca Gorge and the falls at Kozjak.
A longer route will be followed the next day, traversing a trail along the River Soca. As you cross back and forth over the body of water, expect to enjoy strolls in pretty meadows, quiet woodlands and scenic villages ahead of your arrival at Bovec.
This is a centre well known for its array of outdoor activities. The final two days of your holiday can therefore be spent taking advantage of these - such as by going white water rafting - or simply relaxing in the village.
However, there is also scope for some wonderful walks here. Choose to follow a path along the River Koritnica, for example, and you can be charmed by pretty hamlets before arriving at Kluze, a striking fortress.
Alternatively, you could opt to ride the cable car into the Kanin Mountains to discover some wonderful high-altitude routes.
When it comes to walking in unspoilt scenery, Slovenia really does have so much to offer holidaymakers. So, if you're planning an active break this year, why not consider visiting the stunning Soca Valley for your next getaway?
