For a truly wonderful activity holiday, why not head to the South West Coast Path? This fantastic trail winds its way from Minehead in Somerset to Poole Harbour in Dorset, and in trekking along it you'll be able to visit a number of amazing places and try several pursuits.

At 630 miles long it is unlikely you'll have enough time - or stamina - to walk the route in its entirety, but no matter how much of it you follow or where you go there'll be the opportunity to soak up stunning scenery and have great experiences.

One particularly fascinating place you will get the chance to visit while traversing the path is Porthleven.

This coastal Cornish village has the distinction of being the most southerly port in mainland Britain, and in coming here on your activity break you'll get the chance to explore the historic harbour, before setting sail on a fishing trip and casting a line in the hopes of capturing crabs and crayfish.

With the South West Coast Path running right through the heart of the village, staying in Porthleven holiday cottages gives you the chance to explore a number of craft shops, before relaxing on the golden beach.

You can also go surfing in Porthleven, although the strong undercurrent means that only those who are experienced in the sport should attempt to ride the waves.

Spending time in Charmouth cottages will also be a wonderful trip of your walk along the South West Coast Path.

One of the gateways to the Jurassic Coast - England's first natural World Heritage Site - here you can hunt for the fossilised remains of ancient creatures, before visiting the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre to learn more about the region's prehistoric past.

The village is also a great place for water sports, including surfing and kitesurfing, while exploring the many rockpools on the beach could give you the chance to see crabs and other marine animals.

Keen walkers, meanwhile, may be particularly interested in following the stretch of the South West Coast Path that leads up to Golden Cap - a sandstone hill which is the highest point on the entire south coast.

However, the coastal path is not solely limited to Cornwall. Staying in Devon holiday cottages will also give you the chance to experience the trek. Why not visit Instow? At this picturesque village you'll not only be able to recline on an expansive golden beach, but you can also go kayaking, canoeing and swimming in the crystal-blue sea.

Given that it marks the start of the South West Coast Path, it should go without saying that Minehead is another fantastic place to visit on your walking holiday.

However, there is plenty to see and do in the Somerset town itself, with horse riding and cycling just two of the activities on offer.

Alternatively, you could practise your swing at the Minehead and West Somerset Golf Course. Founded in 1882, this is one of the oldest clubs in the south-west of Britain and the 71 par, 6,153-yard course is sure provide an ample challenge for experienced and beginners alike.

The above are just some of the wonderful places that can be incorporated into trekking the South West Coast Path; however, no matter where you decide to go, you can be confident of having an amazing time.
