Top family attractions in the Wye Valley

Monday, 20 February 2012 11:26 AM

If you're searching for the perfect getaway to take with the kids, look no further than a stay in holiday cottages in the Wye Valley. The region straddles both England and Wales and is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) - but it is more than just a pretty place.

Indeed, one of the best ways to get out and explore the stunning scenery is to indulge in some of the many activities on offer. If your kids seem to have never-ending levels of energy, there are plenty of things for them to do that may even tire them out.

As well as setting out on foot and exploring the dense woodland and dramatic gorges, you could up the adrenalin levels by going canoeing, kayaking or rowing on the River Wye.

This is a great way for you and your children to really bond and enjoy some quality time together exploring and learning new skills.

There are firms that provide training and if you prefer something a little more thrilling than a leisurely paddle down river, you could take a trip down the rapids.

Another great activity on offer is cycling, and you might find taking to two wheels is the perfect way to enjoy the fresh air and explore the area around where you are staying.

Again, you can choose from several places where you can hire a set of wheels and there are also numerous traffic-free trails to head down, so you don't have to worry about your little ones being at risk from passing cars.

Horse riding is another memorable way to get to know your holiday destination - and don't be surprised if your children fall in love with the gentle four-legged creatures they meet.

As you trot around the countryside, you can point out some of the local flora and fauna you pass. Because of the Wye Valley's AONB status, the area is well preserved so there are plenty of natural delights to meet the eye.

In addition to the great outdoors, there are also numerous attractions you can take your family to, including Abergavenny Museum, Caldicot Castle and Country Park, Market House in Ross-on-Wye and Abbey Mill - where you'll find the Wye Valley Craft Centre.

Whatever you end up doing with your family though, you will all be glad you chose holiday cottages in this beautiful part of the UK.
