Amazing islands to visit when sailing in the Mediterranean

Wednesday, 24 August 2011 12:11 PM

If you're searching for an active break where you can stretch your legs, see sensational sights and soak up the sun, why not consider embarking on a yacht charter in the Mediterranean? Giving you the chance to get away from it all, this kind of break is perfect for those seeking a holiday packed with excitement.

By hiring a yacht and setting out for the sunshine, you can enjoy a wide variety of activities. Indeed, you can select the islands you visit based on the attractions they offer, as well as their local sailing conditions, meaning you can make your getaway exactly what you want it to be.

So, what are some of the best islands to visit during a holiday at sea?

If you're interested in a sailing holiday in Greece, why not set out for Syros? This beautiful island is a fantastic destination for discerning seafarers, who will find themselves able to discover charming secluded coves perfect for a quiet swim in the ocean.

And that's not all this island has to offer for those seeking an active break. By venturing inland, you can explore Syros's great terrain, which boasts woods and mountains in the north, flattening out in the south. Indeed, there are plenty of fantastic hiking trails to follow.

Meanwhile, the town of Hermoupolis boasts great restaurants and some fascinating attractions including the Archaeological Museum, which houses artefacts dating back some 4,000 years.

Those seeking a watersports holiday in Greece that offers a selection of exhilarating activities in the sea may like to head to another top Mediterranean island - Skiathos.

Known for its lively atmosphere and amazing beaches, Skiathos offers plenty of water sports, including scuba diving, water skiing and windsurfing. And not content with supplying entertainment on the waves alone, it is also boasts some fantastic nightlife, making it a haven for those itching to let their hair down.

This does not mean that you won't find any quiet time here, however. Indeed, you can sail around looking for a tranquil, uncrowded beach, or pay a visit to the scenic old quarter of Skiathos Town.

Alternatively, you could opt for a sailing holiday in Croatia. If you decide to do so, the Kornati Islands - which form Kornati National Park - are an absolute must-see. This gorgeous archipelago is breathtaking, home to countless rare trees, plants and wildlife.

The sense of wonder you feel when you explore here is accentuated by the fact that there are no permanent residents, making it seem a destination that's all the more remote.

As well as the indigenous plants, you can expect to see wonderful coves and clear, sparkling waters. In fact, the cruising grounds here are ranked among some of the best in the world.

Another great island to explore on a sailing odyssey is Italy's Procida. This is a truly tiny island, spanning just 4 sq km, which boasts some fantastic sightseeing opportunities and equally excellent sailing conditions.

Relying on the fishing trade, this isle possesses a marvellous laidback atmosphere and is brimming with charm. The best way to see Procida is to explore on foot or by bicycle, and if you're eager to find the best stretch of sand, head to Chiaia beach.

And to see some amazing views out over this stretch of sand and across the Tyrrhenian Sea, amble to the Piazza dei Martiti. The vistas from here are truly incredible, so you certainly won't regret the trip.

Offering some amazing seafood, the island's cuisine is fabulous and prepared in a simple, traditional way.

A popular holiday destination, the Canary Islands are home to Lanzarote - another excellent isle to explore during an active sailing adventure. Providing varied sailing opportunities, you can opt to cruise through the open Atlantic Ocean or stick gentler waters - the choice is yours.

A common base for sailing getaways, Lanzarote has plenty to offer its visitors. Alongside its mild climate and gorgeous white sand beaches, it has some fabulous landscapes. Indeed, it is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve protected site.

In addition to its stunning scenery, it has a relaxed atmosphere that's ideal for holidays - or simply a quiet interval before you set off to your next destination.
