5 of the world’s best spots for wind surfing

Wednesday, 15 February 2012 4:58 PM

Skimming across the waves with the wind in your hair and the spray in your face can be one of the most exhilarating feelings and often this thrilling sport doesn’t get the credit it deserves. So, here at ActivityAway.co.uk we’ve come up with a list of five of our favourite windsurfing spots in the world to entice and inspire.

Maui, Hawaii - This is the place where the world’s professional windsurfers gather for some of the best windsurfing conditions on the planet. The weather is warm and sunny, and wind conditions are good throughout most of the year. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit if you’re looking for the best combination of wind and swell.

Tarifa, Spain - A few places lay claim to being the windsurfing capital of the world, but Tarifa’s claim seems to be one of the most founded, home to numerous windsurfing competitions and championships. This small area, located at the tip of the European continent, near the Gibraltar Straight has wind speeds of up to 40 knots and sunny warm conditions year round.

Langebaan, South Africa - The Langebaan Lagoon, located off the Cape West Coast in South Africa has been described as Africa’s premier windsurfing destination. Conditions are ideal for beginners and those more advanced windsurfers who want to try high speed flat water blasting. The area is internationally recognised and is also home to some top windsurfing competitions. This spot is great for nature lovers too, with numerous bird species and small mammals.

Oregon, USA - The Columbia River George on the border between the states of Washington and Oregon is a great adventure sport region with excellent spots for mountain biking and hiking. It is also said to be America’s best windsurfing destination. Imagine gliding through the stunning Cascade Mountains through this beautiful river canyon, where the wind is channelled all summer long.

Bonaire - The Dutch Caribbean island of Bonaire is all about windsurfing and the conditions here are ideal, with strong trade winds and high temperatures year round. The best place for windsurfing here is the protected marine park of Lac Bay, with shallow calm waters, perfect for beginners. However, more advanced windsurfers will be more than content with the ten-foot swells and strong wind out beyond the reef.
