As it is the largest lake in the UK, there are few better places to try water sports than Loch Lomond in the Scottish Highlands. As a result, activity lovers looking for the ideal break could do worse than hiring large holiday homes in Scotland near to the landmark.

Indeed, you may wish to get a group of likeminded friends and family together, so you can all stay in Scottish castles for rent. That way, you can spend your evenings relaxing and chatting in your accommodation and your days trying your hand at a host of exhilarating hobbies.

Loch Lomond is a beautiful spot to book accommodation in a castle near. Part of the Trossoachs National Park, the area is renowned for its rugged charm and awe-inspiring vistas.

Even if you opt against taking to the water and stick to dry land, you will find plenty to keep you busy here. You can strike out on one of the trails that winds around the park - keep an eye out for otters and water voles at the water's edge.

Other creatures who reside in the area include deer, red squirrels, black grouse and osprey.

Of course, the lake itself is also teeming with life and you may be able to catch sight of some of it buy hiring a boat and heading out on to the water. You could sail or row around the edge to take in the pretty shoreline and craggy rocks that rise out of it.

Should you be willing to brave the cold, hiring canoes is a fun group activity. You may take a tumble in the water, but canoeing can be incredibly relaxing and you might wish to take advantage of the guided tours that are offered here.

Another option is to go kayaking, or - for a little bit of luxury - your party could charter a yacht and really explore the loch in style.

However, there is one activity above all the others that is certain to appeal to adrenalin junkies - wakeboarding.

On the eastern shore of the loch is a purpose-built wakeskate and wakeboard school, where you will be able to receive all the training you need to get to grips with this exciting sport.

In addition to wakeboarding, you can also learn to waterski and both are sure to get your heart racing as you are towed at high speed across the water.

This could be a holiday you never forget - so, don't be surprised if your visits here end up becoming a regular tradition!
