With the current economic situation, many people are looking to cut down on winter sport travel costs and look for alternative ski resorts that provide better value for money. New research has revealed that Eastern European resorts provide the best value ski holidays this winter, so here’s a list of the top three.

The study undertaken by Sainsbury’s Travel Money and conducted across 18 different resorts, reveals that Croatia, Slovenia and Bulgaria come out on top when it comes to value for money. The study calculated the cost of two adults going away for one week, including flights, transfers, a three or four star hotel stay and lift passes.

Bjelolasica, Croatia - The ski resort of Bjelolasica in Croatia comes out on top at just £1,024 per couple. The resort lies is within the grounds of the Croatian Olympic Centre and is the place where the famous skier Janica Kostelic started skiing. Set in a scenic area of limestone mountains the resort is home to the longest piste in Croatia, as well as six other slopes. Although fairly small compared to some of the ski resorts in Europe it’s a great place for intermediate skiers. It’s best for those who want a quiet skiing holiday with a true local flavour.

Kranjska Gora, Slovenia - The Slovenian ski resort of Kranjska Gora comes out in second place with the cost of a ski holiday at just £1,204 for two adults. Kranjska Gora is located near the boarders with Italy and Austria and provides true Alpine skiing. It covers an area of 125 hectares and has a capacity for 20,200 skiers per hour. Here, there are pistes for beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers as well as other winter sport activities such as ice climbing, cross country skiing, sledding, ski mountaineering and snowboarding. There are many ski schools around the resort too, as well as special areas for the kids to learn. The resort is best for families and those who want to try out a variety of activities.

Bansko, Bulgaria - In third place at £1,261 for a week’s skiing for a couple is Bankso, Bulgaria’s number one ski resort. Although Bansko may not be the biggest in Bulgaria, it often has the best snow record and therefore the longest ski season, regularly lasting until May 15. Over the last few years the resort has undergone a massive redevelopment, with brand new facilities and luxury hotels. The town of Bansko itself is located 925 metres above sea level, and provides unique architecture and history, as well as excellent ski facilities. There are 70km of marked pistes in the resort as well as a fun park for snowboarders. Slopes suit beginners, intermediates and experts. There is a good selection of charming après ski bars and cafes nearby. The resort is best for young couples who want enjoy the great ski facilities.

So, if you’re after some great value ski destinations this winter, consider trying some alternative ski resorts to the ones in Switzerland, Austria and France and why not head to Croatia, Slovenia and Bulgaria?
