British skiers want breathalyser tests on the slopes

Friday, 13 January 2012 9:51 AM

92 per cent of British skiers said they want motoring style deterrents to tackle speed skiing. The research released today by MORE TH>N travel insurance reveals that alcohol is blamed as the biggest cause of dangerous speed skiing.

If British skiers have their way we could soon see motoring style rules that include, speed limits, ski patrols and breathalyser tests. Many also want those who ignore the rules to face penalty points, fines and even bans.

Almost half say that speed skiing is becoming an increasing problem and poses a serious danger to other holiday makers. The most common excuses given for skiing to fast were alcohol, lack of awareness and irresponsible young skiers.

"It's perhaps surprising how many skiers would like to see motoring style deterrents, checks and punishments introduced on the piste,” said Matt Pernet, head of MORE TH>N travel insurance. “Aside from the potentially life changing consequences of dangerous skiing, if someone is responsible for an accident and has been drinking they won't be covered on their insurance policy,” he continued.

46 per cent of skiers also said that they want helmets made compulsory on the slopes, while others complain that they are uncomfortable or they prefer to feel the wind in their hair. A quarter also said they ‘looked better without them’. Mr Pernet added that, “Although helmets may not be seen by all as a ‘sexy' option they could save your life in the event of a collision or fall."
