Top places for a husky safari

Tuesday, 21 February 2012 12:48 PM

The Arctic temperatures are set to return to Europe this week, so there’s still plenty of time for a snowy adventure. Cheapflights.co.uk is encouraging people to embrace the cold and swap sunny safaris with the snowy kind and have come up with their five favourite destinations for a husky sleigh ride through the snow.

Greenland
Greenland is one the best spots for a husky holiday and an opportunity to get closely acquainted with nature and the traditional Greenland way of life. Tour through sparsely populated settlements with traditional and colourful charm and visit the town of Tasiilaq, offering views of the Sermilik fjord, where huge icebergs float by. Witness seals and even polar bears as you glide through Greenland’s epic landscapes. Travellers can get to Greenland by flying into Reykjavik then taking a helicopter to the island.

Lapland, Finland
Usually associated with sleigh rides pulled by reindeer, Lapland is one of the premier husky safari destinations. The awe-inspiring frozen fantasy-like landscapes offer all kinds of husky holiday options, from two days, to a week or more. The season lasts through until April and visitors can enjoy gliding through snow covered pine forests, in between icy lakes and the Pallas-Yllas National Park.

Lapland, Sweden
Go husky sledding traditional Sami style in Swedish Lapland, where the season runs until start of April and encompasses sledding rides through stunning powdery scenes, featuring fells, national parks, sugar dusted forests covered in snow, and plunging icy rivers. And after your husky ride snuggle up next to the fire to enjoy typical Lappish dishes such as smoked fish, sautéed reindeer and desserts made with cloud or lingonberries.

Norway
In Norway, husky adventures are available in both summer and winter. During the winter visitors enjoy the typical snow sledding experience, while in the summer, the dogs are tied to a wagon instead. It’s not only about the sledding here, you can also enjoy fishing, hiking and camping. Head up into the mountains of Sylane and Meraker for the best range of activities and spectacular views.

Yukon, Canada
Husky holidays here vary from long vacations to short breaks and cater for all levels of 'mushers’. Recommended husky safari specialists include Muktuk Adventures, a one hundred acre ranch located on the Tahini River. Visitors can experience beautiful views of the river on three sides of the ranch and enjoy unique, experiences such as visiting the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, featuring numerous species of local mammals in their natural habitat.
